*sex, not gender

Gender is a social construct.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-01 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh fuck off. This is so not the place for that shit.

DA

Genuinely curious, why is this inappropriate to bring up in a discussion about gender issues?

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2011-06-02 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Because it's taking someone's positive epiphany and trying to shame them for it by pissing all over it with pedantry.

This. This so much.

Yes and no, I'd say. First of all, I wouldn't necessarily assume that the OP definitely meant sex. There's physical, psychological, and social dysphoria, and people have them to different extents.

Also, not sure exactly what you mean about gender being a social construct. If you mean that gender largely comes into play in how we interact with others and live in society, then I guess I can give you that. If you mean that gender is solely created by society, then I would disagree.

I wouldn't describe myself or someone else as being born with the "wrong" gender because I feel that your gender is whatever you identify as. But if someone else feels differently about their gender, I'm not really going to tell them they're wrong.

I'm right there with you, OP *hugs*

Fandom, and the friends I've met through fandom, have helped me a lot with similar issues. I spent most of my life in denial about being a trans man; fandom opened my eyes a lot about queer issues and gender issues and helped me come to terms with who I am.

I'm glad for you, OP. :)

[identity profile] citrinesunset.livejournal.com 2011-06-02 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
I'm glad, OP! In my experience, fandom can be a very understanding place for this stuff. I wish you the best of luck.

You're not really born with a gender, though. You can always assume a different gender, it's switching actual sex that's the difficult part.

Sex and gender are two different things, people need to stop using the terms interchangeably.

[identity profile] radio-nurse.livejournal.com 2011-06-02 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
I think OP just meant they wished they'd been assigned a different gender when they were born.

You're not really born with a gender, though. You can always assume a different gender,

Also, I don't... really agree with this? Your gender identity is what it is. One may have been born in a body that doesn't match their gender identity, but they can't just change that identity and make themselves identify with their body if they don't, you know?

Unless you just meant you can change your presentation to alter how society reads you, in which case, yeah.

I always wonder when people say this: Which parts of the brain are gender assigned, exactly? I mean, which effects of the "brain chemistry" do all women have in common, for example?

Sex and gender are two different things, people need to stop using the terms interchangeably.

It's not necessarily that easy to know the difference between the two, though; for the longest time, I didn't, because in my native language we only have one word covering both terms.
I'm not saying that's a common reason for people using them interchangeably, though, but I know it made it hard for me to understand the difference between the two things, at least.

Word choice aside, I think we all probably get what you meant, OP. And good for you, congratulations.

I'm happy for you, op.

[identity profile] mskye.livejournal.com 2011-06-02 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, fandom. Without you, I might still be the homophobic little shit I was when I was 14.

Glad you had your epiphany, OP! :)

That's great, OP. <3

Hugs OP<3 That's why fandom is an epic win.

Glad for you OP. *hugs*
