for what it's worth, I have this problem too, OP. it's like a kind of fandom transference. don't feel guilty - just try to have fun with whatever fandom works for you. I'm sorry about your grandfather.

Explain this to your fans. Seriously. This is a legitimate excuse, and people would be way more pissed off by seeing you seemingly butterfly your way over to a shiny new fandom with no explanation. People grieve differently, and that's okay, we'll understand. Maybe someday you can go back to your old fandom and finish up what you were doing. But, until then, it would be nice to have some sort of idea of why you stopped working on your WIPs.

Are you me? Seriously, I could've written this secret.

If you're genuinely concerned about your readers, just post up a note explaining why you took a hiatus from that fandom. People will understand (or they won't, and you'll learn who your true friends are) and you'll perhaps alleviate some of your guilt.

I fully intend to finish my WIPs even though its been almost a year and a half since I touched a few of them. If the stories are worth telling, then they'll still be worth reading, even if it takes you years to get there :)

First, I'm sorry for your loss.

Second, I agree with the above comments. Just add a author note to your fics, and maybe make a post in the fic comms in your fandom, that you are taking a break for personal reasons.

Third, most people do this. It's why some can't walk down certain streets, or listen to certain songs, etc. You're just doing it with fandoms, is all.

I don't think you need to feel guilty, and I second what a couple people have said: if you feel like you need to give an explanation to your readers (and you don't have to, this is just if you want to), then I'm sure most people would be very understanding about this. Frankly, anyone who isn't understanding about it isn't worth your time.

And while I haven't been turned off of fandoms for this reason, I can definitely relate to having things like this tarnished. Sometimes, whatever we happened to be doing or involved in during a tough time comes to remind us of it.
