Yeah, you've made some valid points and this is the first time I've heard such an argument, so that's interesting. I thought this series really pulled off some unusual stuff, though... namely I'm talking about Yukiatsu's crossdressing. His relationship with Tsuruko is really interesting to me. And to me, Menma is adorable without entering total moeblob territory. It makes sense for her to be innocent and cute because she died as a child, and most of her cute moments are also legitimately funny.

Also, I can kind of relate to Anaru on a feeling-shitty-about-being-a-virgin level. I do agree that the show's emphasis on it is pretty skeezy in context, though. But I'm not sure what you mean about the fanservice. Maybe I'm just immune at this point, but I really don't remember there being a lot of it. I can only really recall some gags with Menma sitting on Jintan's crotch and stuff, which I wouldn't really consider "fanservice" because they didn't involve shots of her ass or anything...

Oh man, I love Yukiatsu and his relationship with Tsuruko! I enjoyed the first few episodes, but it wasn't until the crossdressing revelation that I said "I need to watch the rest of this!" And while I would find Menma annoying under normal circumstances, the fact that she's still a kid (mentally) makes it okay with me.

I haven't noticed any fanservice either. (Though maybe I'm just desensitized after watching things like HotD.)

On fanservice: the 'Menma in a bath towel' scene was the most egregious example. The 'Menma on Jintan's crotch' scene wasn't fanservice in the showing-of-skin sense, but I'd argue it was at least partly meant to titillate a particular section of the audience, so.

And no, there isn't a lot of fanservice, and they seemed to have toned it down from early eps... but that doesn't mean that the few examples weren't jarring and unnecessary, you know?
