Tyrion is largely considered the best character in the books, already, and then they went and got an actor who's talented, smart, and pretty damn good looking to pull the guy off. This was really an inevitability.

In fact, if they had gotten someone considerably less attractive than Peter to do it (which is how I considered Tyrion to appear, when reading it), I wouldn't be surprised if he still had a legion of fangirls as a result. Tyrion's just a BAMF like that.
