If OP is referring to the cultural mindset, I agree. I'm socially awkward and can never say what I really think to someone's face. I can not stand people being direct with me and in-your-face and it makes me feel uncomfortable as fuck (and this is -why- i'm socially awkward)
In japan, they have this whole culture of indirectness and non-confrontation. A lot of things are done via (often extensive) proxy, and for someone like me, it's a far easier method of communication.
Also it's considered rude to stare directly at someone in Japan for too long which is blessing for someone like me who hates eye contact.

Interesting point, because one thing I liked about the more direct Australian culture is how in-you-face people are. Back at home the need of politeness and the social landmine confused me way too much, I can never get the people say one thing but really mean another but really it means something else thing, that was even when I lived there. Now I get a free pass because people assume I'm a banana haha.

Which is hilarious because the "nice-but-not-really-we-are-kinda-direct-but-really-we-are-also-hiding-how-we-feel-because-we-are-nice" element of my second home, New Zealand, also confused me hard core.

Which is funny, because I'm super-direct, and that's the biggest problem I have, living in Japan -- I've been here for almost a year and I still have no idea how to deal with all the passive-aggressive behind-your-back stuff (as I see it).
