In japan, they have this whole culture of indirectness and non-confrontation. A lot of things are done via (often extensive) proxy, and for someone like me, it's a far easier method of communication.
Also it's considered rude to stare directly at someone in Japan for too long which is blessing for someone like me who hates eye contact.

Which is hilarious because the "nice-but-not-really-we-are-kinda-direct-but-really-we-are-also-hiding-how-we-feel-because-we-are-nice" element of my second home, New Zealand, also confused me hard core.
