Not to wee on your party or anything, but I've read those studies and I'm fairly certain the results of the most recent one will turn out the same as every previous positive result for interbreeding has: flagrant contamination. Or simply using a test population that had a later common ancestor. Most of what we know about Neanderthals - genetically and culturally - is really kinda unsupportive of the whole interbreeding hypothesis.

What? No, dude. The draft sequence of the neanderthal genome (covering ~60% of it) clearly shows that non-African humans share a lot of variants with them, strongly suggesting that there was interbreeding after early humans left Africa. I'm pretty sure the original paper is free if you're interested in reading more:

And OP, I think your headcanon for the human race is AWESOME. Even if human/alien mixes seem impossible now, who knows how genetic technology will change in a couple of millennia?

That's beautiful. I'm adopting that one, thanks!

I love this concept infinitely. What a beautiful, elegant idea. I'm keeping it with me.

This made me smile. :)

That's a beautiful way of looking at it, anon. I've totally shipped humanity/the-rest-of-the-universe since Jack Harkness popped up in Nu Who. And I think it was copperbadge who wrote in a fic "Humanity has touched ever star (in their naughty bits)."

I really think it all comes back to what Carl Sagan said, "We are all made of star stuff." Every item that is in our body was once in a star and will eventually return to the stars. It really is beautiful.

I would like this to happen too but realistically any aliens we meet will probably be too different genetically to breed with. I mean, we can't breed with Chimpanzees (anymore) and they're our closest living relative who evolved on the same planet. Real aliens are likely to have a completely different number of chromosomes to us. They might code for sex differently, like female turkeys who are XY instead of XX. They might even be made of arsenic or silicon.

The exploring part is possible. We're already doing it. I hope we make it to Mars in my lifetime, maybe even Europa.

I did love the optimism of the Doctor. It makes a change from 'humanity is doomed!' I think our species can survive things like global warming if we all work together.

Works for me. Let's face it, there are humans who'll shag picnic tables given half a chance, I'm sure the prospect of a fellow sentience isn't going to slow us down for long.

Unless we can eat them or get high off them more easily, of course. Actually, no, we'll probably eat them, snort them and shag them.

Unless we want their land and/or resources as well, in which case...well, I'm sure a picture of mankind and its moods is beginning to form here.
