And it looked soooo painfulllllllll. It was such a satisfying scene in the book, too.

I think he was awesome as Viserys. I'm missing his pouts too.

I had no affection whatsoever for book Viserys. He was less of a character than a plot device to shine a spotlight on Dany's development and growth over the first part of the novel. We only see him through Dany's eyes, as a bullying and menacing figure.

In the tv series, Dany is the unknown figure, being for the first few episodes with hardly anything to say, and the same mouth-slightly-open expression in every scene she is in. Viserys we see more of and we might even see through his eyes at the episode 6 eating a horse heart scene.

From interviews with writers and the actor, it seems that they have decided to flesh out the character from villainous cardboard cutout to give him a believable psychology, motivations and so on.

I believe that tv Viserys is one of the best adaptation decisions they made.

Or it might just be that extraordinarily pretty actor and wig have short-circuited my critical process.

Not to be down on the writers, because I love the writing on GOT, but I really attribute Viserys's depth on the show to Harry Lloyd's talent and commitment as an actor.

The writing added a little with the dragon eggs scene, but I'm not half as impressed by that dialogue as I am when I hear Harry talk about Viserys in his interviews. I think it's clear he's really done an astonishing amount of work on that character, for being on the show for such a short time.

I love how overjoyed I get whenever I see a GoT secret. And everyone should miss Viserys. Harry Lloyd made him likable.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-04 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
Likable? What? I've rarely found a character so reprehensible and sniveling and disposable.

[identity profile] generalstolas.livejournal.com 2011-06-04 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
In the books I hated him, and I cheered when he died. But in the show Harry Lloyd made him seem more...I don't know, relatable? That's not the right word, but you could see through his performance that Viserys was desperate, alone, and just wanted things to be back to when they were before Robert's Rebellion. IDK, the way he cried out "Dany, please" was heart wrenching. D:

[identity profile] mithrril.livejournal.com 2011-06-04 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
I completely agree! I was almost sad to see him go but I was still really, really excited when he died since it made me so happy when I read it.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-04 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
Yup, Harry Lloyd was just amazing in what could have been a thankless role. Viserys was still the pompous jerk we all love to hate, but Lloyd put these undertones into the character that made me feel a tiny bit of sympathy. The relief in his voice upon hearing he'd get his crown and then... :( I never thought I'd feel sorry for him, but Lloyd killed that scene.

[identity profile] agnes-bean.livejournal.com 2011-06-04 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
I agree with this so much. He was still Viserys -- reprehensible, creepy, and awful. But Lloyd made me feel sorry for him at the same time. He's one of the characters that I actually thought was better on the show than in the book, mostly because of the actor (Robert was the other, for me. And maybe Cersei. The rest of the cast is great, but I don't like them MORE than their book counterparts).

I am really going to have to start seeking Harry Lloyd out in other things, because I can't believe how interesting he made Viserys.

This!

[identity profile] vivalana.livejournal.com 2011-06-04 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
I was surprised by how ok I was with the "crowning" scene. It was actually much more graphic in my head. Still, will miss Viserys. What an amusing, hateful asshole.

At least there's still you, Joffrey, you little worm; hating you feels so right and good!

[identity profile] wake-the-dragon.livejournal.com 2011-06-04 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
I was so glad when Viserys died in the book (haven't seen what the crowing looks like on the TV show yet as I haven't goten to that episode) but I sort of pitied him.

Don't get me wrong he was hateful and I hated him but there was some pity because of how patehtic he actually was. He was vile and abusive but you could tell how weak and stupid he was; Danny had this realization in the book when she took away his horse and she never feared him again.

He was just a really pathetic person deep down but I only feel some pity for him; I do believe he got what he deserved in the end though.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-04 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
I blame Harry Lloyd. He had this way of playing the character that made it obvious that Viserys was in WAY over his head trying to manipulate a group of people that he was in no position to manipulate, and that deep down HE KNEW IT. All the histrionics and tantrums were just bluster to conceal the fact that he was never in control.

Not ignoring the fact that he was a horrid little shit, it also made him rather pitiful to me.

he was an awesome unlikeable character!! his death was sooooo satisfying on screen.....i need to read this book.

I think Harry Lloyd must be a fantastic actor because he was able to humanize such a loathsome character just a bit. I still hated Viserys, but when the time came for him to be crowned I couldn't watch. Partly due to my squeamishness (although it was pointless because that gif is EVERYWHERE) but partly because he looked so happy when they told him he was getting his crown. Poor fucker needed intensive therapy.

On the other hand, OP, if you feel you're like him, I hope you just mean that you wear a bad wig and can bulge your eyes out really far. Because if you're an inbred, sister-abusing psychopath...well.

[identity profile] mimine.livejournal.com 2011-06-04 06:47 am (UTC)(link)
I am not a book!fan, all I knew of Viserys I knew from the show. I think that his death was very well deserved and I cheered (and it was nice to see Khal Drogo do something other than fuck for a change). However, I did feel sorry for him, he was loathsome with shades of lost little boy peeking through. We all might have similar traits to him OP, I don't think there is something that bad with that.

[identity profile] oohasparklie.livejournal.com 2011-06-04 02:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I really wish they had cast Harry Lloyd as someone who would stay around for a while. He was terrific on this show! (And really nice to look at!)

(Anonymous) 2011-06-04 02:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I think one of the most impressive things about Martin's writing - and they reflect this very well in the tv show - is that even unlikeable, downright despicable characters are still there for a reason. You hate them, but you still understand them, and you understand that they serve a purpose in the story. Especially in most tv shows annoying characters are really just that, annoying and a pain in the ass, and you wish the writers hadn't done that to the show. But people like Viserys, or Joffrey? You hate them passionately, but you don't hate the author for inflicting them on us.

[identity profile] twilightedge.livejournal.com 2011-06-04 04:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, he made Viserys pity him. In the book? Yeah not so much.

[identity profile] universejuice.livejournal.com 2011-06-05 09:57 am (UTC)(link)
I had been really looking forward to seeing that scene in a visual medium; it had always stuck with me from the books as being not only a satisfying but really brutal and creative death. To see that the episode was titled "The Golden Crown" had me pumped for just this, and it didn't let me down.

As everyone else is saying, the actor does a fantastic job of portraying him so that he really does feel like someone pitiable, rather than just a raging asshole who abuses his sister just to be a jerk. There's a reason to him, and as much as you love to hate him, you know why he's there, like Cersei or Theon.
