I don't believe that I have irrational girl hate (those mermaids were my favorite part of this film and my favorite character of the last two was Tia Dalma), but I wish she had been the one to die too.

Not that I particularly dislike Penelope Cruz, but I really didn't like her character. I found her boring and mildly irritating, and her odd romance type thing with Jack felt kind of...I don't know, strange I guess. I'm not overly fond of Jack (haven't been since the first movie), so perhaps that has something to do with it. But had she been the one to die, and if she truly was Blackbeard's daughter (I still think she was lying about the connection there because that makes her devotion to him that much more twisted), Blackbeard could easily have blamed Jack for her death and there's an awesome, unpredictable arch-nemesis ready and waiting for later films. That or I guess I just found it too overly predictable that Jack would pull a bait-and-switch at the last minute and save her.

This. Sometimes it's not irrational girl hate. Sometimes it's just hate of a character who happens to be a girl.

Not that I actively wanted her to die like OP. I just didn't care if she lived or not. I thought her character was really forced and hackneyed and scanned like a PotC fanfic self-insert character. Every single one of her character traits was practically tailor-selected to make her a Super Special Snowflake. That's how it felt to me, anyway. Very off-putting.

I can see how someone would think this, but despite being predictable, I really thought it was just... mostly common sense, to be completely honest. It's between one life and another, and you suspect that X will sacrifice Y's life for theirs. However, you want Y to live, so you lie about which is in which goblet so X drinks the deathy one and Y gets the lifey one, and badabing badaboom. However, I think it might have been a neat twist if he had pulled the switcheroo and Blackbeard had a change of heart and chose to save his daughter, but because the goblets were switched she ended up dying anyway... which presumably is where the future arch-nemesis you speak of might have come in.

What I did think was dumb as hell was the fact that she even needed saving in the first place. She's a brilliant swordswoman... and yet she managed to carelessly slash her hand open while pulling a sword out of someone? Give me a break. 8| That doesn't even make sense.

Anon you replied to

True, but I still wasn't terribly happy with the whole thing. It made perfect sense for Jack to do it since Blackbeard seemed set on saving himself, and his daughter (crap, I can't remember her name at the moment) seemed so desperate to save him while Jack was invested in keeping only her alive. Why the heck wouldn't he do everything in his power to save her and kill off the guy who was the biggest threat to him at the time? Still didn't sit well with me, though. It felt kind of cheap, even if it made sense for things to have worked out the way they did.

...if he had pulled the switcheroo and Blackbeard had a change of heart and chose to save his daughter, but because the goblets were switched she ended up dying anyway

That would have made the end of the movie infinitely more interesting to me.

As for the whole sword thing: yeah, I don't know. She never seemed all that bright to me even if she was depicted as being a gifted liar/schemer/swordsman. Perhaps she was so caught up in the moment when Blackbeard was run through that she neglected the basic instinct to keep herself from harm and simply grabbed the sword without thinking? That's the best I could come up with.

Replying with relevant account.

I would have loved this. Jack having an arch-nemesis because of that would've given Blackbeard more dimension - he definitely deserved more screen time than he got. Blackbeard's introduction was fairly win, but every scene of him after that was comparatively mild. I wish we'd been shown why he was the pirate all other pirates feared.

... I think the more I talk about it, the more I kind of wish that was what had happened. xD Especially considering I didn't really like the ending of what Jack did to Penelope Cruz. I was just really... bwuh? About that. I don't think it made sense. 8|

But yeah, man, now I am sad. PotC writers, why do you not share my brilliance?

Regarding Blackbeard... I do agree that he kind of mellowed out throughout the remainder of his scenes, though I didn't really notice until now. Guess they just thought the creepy evil in his first scene was enough to convince everyone that he was ~terrifying and they didn't try as hard later.

Yeah, the island maroon seemed like just a throwback to previous movies. But hopefully the DVD will have several deleted scenes, and we can marvel at What Could Have Been.

That would have made it more interesting. And I have to admit, I totally did not even remember how she got injured...but it was a poisoned sword, right?

There were a lot of things I liked about the movie...but not really Angelica. I wish they'd given some more focus to Blackbeard and fleshed him out more. :(
