Okay, while I think it would be really great if Hourou Musuko included genderqueer representation and all... this... um. No. You're narrowing the definition of trans way too harshly. Speaking as a trans woman myself, what you have described here -- "He seems to think of himself as a he-- a "he" who wants desperately to be a "she"." -- that is exactly how I thought of myself when I was that age, both because I didn't have the right words for it, and I didn't feel like I COULD just say I was a girl, even to myself. The idea that Nitori has to have the self confidence and ability to deny what the rest of the world says about her gender to straight up identify not just as "boy who wants to be a girl" but "girl" to be counted as trans is ridiculous. The terminology isn't perfect, but this is pretty obviously her identifying with female over male. At this stage in her life, those are just the only words she has for it, or at least all she feels like she can identify as, at the moment (either for reasons of confidence or because of cultural context). I mean, she's also said she intends to transition. She's been uncomfortable and worried about the effects of puberty on her. She flat out said she felt tranquility during the fashion show. She ... pretty obviously identifies as female! If your reading of Nitori as genderqueer is really just based on something as minor as "boy who wants to be a girl", I'm sorry, but that's really erasing. Don't get me wrong, it would be really great if it was more complicated than that -- we really do need to see more (any, really) genderqueer representation in media! But nothing I've seen in this series seems to suggest that at all.

FtM here, and totally agree about the confidence/age/ability to articulate it thing. I definitely thought of myself as, "a girl who wants to be a boy," or, "a girl who should have been a boy," when I was younger.

I just wanted to add-on that I think a child in Japan, where acceptance or understanding of transpeople is not very well spread (there are, however, a few public figures that have come out as trans. The only one I actually know of is a comedian, though, and since comedians tend to be known for their strangeness and weird, not necessarily societally-accepted antics (i.e. hamming up being a raging pervert, or something, for the sake of comedy), I don't think many people tend to take it seriously/it doesn't necessarily help them understand. :-/ So without that circulated idea of being trans, I think a child in that society could have a harder time coming to the words he or she felt best described himself. But I don't know. Because a child anywhere could struggle with that.

...Terribly OT, and somewhat dumb, but I really enjoy your comments, because I always briefly get the image of Bean debating SJ issues on livejournal.

Er, now you can continue with your well-articulated commenting; that's really all! (':
