The fictional material is not a problem. And for the record, it's never the material that's the problem.

The people using it for grooming is the problem.

Like I said, there are a lot of ways to approach the issue. Think of the "guns don't kill people" argument. This holds weight, but doesn't stop many people from disagreeing, and in fact many governments in the world do place heavy restrictions on private gun ownership out of the belief that the bad outweighs the good.

I believe the OP of that secret was a native Japanese and was concerned because of the relative prevalence of shota/loli material available and accepted in their culture.

DA.

That's not even remotely comparable. You can accidentally kill someone (or yourself) with a gun. People can use guns in a fit of anger without thinking it through, if the guns are easily available.

I don't see anyone accidentally or spontaneously using drawings or fictional stories to convince kids that getting molested is okay.

Not remotely? Really? Call me crazy, but I don't think the accidental risks of firearms are at all the main motivator for governmental restrictions, especially weighed alongside the obvious and much greater danger of guns being used for criminal activities. You're grasping at straws.

It's a valid comparison because both involve the potential for abuse. A lot of things can be turned into murder weapons, but firearms are the focus of much legal consideration; there are many factors that contribute to that. Similarly, publications of pornographic materials go under heavy scrutiny. If owning and producing such materials isn't illegal - and I'm not necessarily arguing that it should be - then maybe displaying and distributing them to minors ought to be. Mind you, this can definitely get very sticky, as with all legislation-related matters. I can see a lot of people on LJ alone possibly getting in trouble if something like that were strictly enforced.

^^^eta: Don't think that I'm trying to argue that no such materials should be produced or that we should start persecuting "thought crimes"; I agree that they could act as a safe outlet for non-acting pedophiles. All this is just a way to say that it is not as simple a matter as just saying "fictional works can't hurt anybody, it's never their fault but the people who use them" and leaving it at that. Sure, that is technically true, but once a risk has been detected I believe it needs to be given due consideration.
