Speaking from my experience, as someone with a rape trigger, it tends to be a lot easier to figure out with books for me. For example no where in the dust jacket summary of Sarah Dessen's Just Listen does it say that she was raped, and it's not until more than halfway through the book that you actually have the main character say she was raped and go back to that night. But within 20 pages I knew what had happened.

Also, from what I've seen, published books seems to deal with the aftermath of rape mostly. There's very rarely actual rape in books unless it's a flashback-esque scene. A lot of fic deals with the actual rape and the aftermath which can be triggering for people.

And yeah, book reviews. If I'm really concerned I'll just look for a spolier-filled book review. But, like I said, it tends to, for me at least, be easier to spot rape in pulished books than fic. And there tends to be less of a chance of it being shittly handled, though I may just be lucking out on the books I read.

Also, because I noticed you mentioned them, movie ratings are actually kind of useless. For example I went to see Watchmen without having read the comic first and checked the rating. It was "rated R for strong graphic violence, sexuality, nudity and language". Apparently the attempted rape was not a factor in the rating, they were more concerned by consensual sex, the word "fuck" and a dick.

Oh movie ratings people, you so useless.

good lord. D: maybe- idk, I know for movies there's this (http://www.kids-in-mind.com/), which covers pretty much everything? It's geared at kids (obvs, from the URL, uh) but could be helpful for people with sex /violence triggers? The only problem I could see would be that the description itself could be triggering, as sometimes it gets descriptive as hell iirc, but. Might be a thought?
