I was annoyed with this movie because it completely mischaracterizes what a charter school is. Charter schools are supposed to be a way of testing out various new methods for teaching or treating students, which then should filter back into public schools if they prove successful.

Most charter schools are NOT actually better than public schools in terms of test results, post-graduating success, etc. (if you control for similar households/background factors for each student). In fact, many charter schools do worse than their public school. They're EXPERIMENTAL, not a superior option to the public school.

Well, charter schools in this area tend to be better for a variety of reasons, primarily class size and the ability to choose their students based on applications. Public schools, by their very nature, deal with a student population that is much bigger and more diverse than the local charter schools.

But I agree with your characterization of what charters are supposed to be. It would be nice if what worked well in a small, controlled setting worked equally well "in the wild."
