I'm actually not trolling, though I did expect some backlash.

I'll agree about the setting of ME/Shep being a war hero allowing her to kind of roll with it. But most 'female options' don't fit so well as Shep does (due to the roles they assume). And I do think many games would be very different if, instead of writing for the male option first, they wrote for the female option first.

Such as...?

Fable stuck out for me, actually. I always though that a househusband should react differently than a housewife to the fact that his wife is off gallivanting while he raises the kids, and the reactions to males and females entering whorehouses/talking to prostitutes should be different imo. And I really expected people to comment on the fact that a woman is running around the kingdom alone with her dog. I never got even an "oh isn't it unsafe for a woman alone" sort of remark. And Fable's default fantasy sort of setting/the way most characters react to you in general should enable some changes.

But Fable has many, many issues on top of that, so maybe that should be at the bottom of the list of complaints.

DA fits in that category also, being that it's a default fantasy setting where the protagonist usually isn't automatically recognized as "OMG YOU'RE THAT HERO" so the hero status doesn't override gender.

According to one of the writers for the series who appears to be responsible for much of Shepard's characterization (people linked his LJ above), Shepard is written as gender neutral, period, and not with MShep written first and FShep just given all the same dialogue. He said that he did it that way because he thought female players would appreciate the neutrality, and even asked for feedback in case people wanted him to do things differently.

I'm kind of skeptical that it's actually possible to write a character as gender-neutral. Writers will always have biases and internalized concepts of gender. I just don't know.

For the post linked, many women do appreciate that Shepard is written that way (myself included) so I can't see them doing major changes to her (thankfully).
