Yeah, I have to say, this is one of those things that's very strange about the warnings debate. There are a LOT of ways to find out what's going on in a professionally produced piece of fiction. There are relatively few ways to find out what's going on in fanfic.

Heck, when the HP books were still coming out, as soon as I finished the book I picked up the phone and called a friend and told her who died, because she really hates suspense and wouldn't have enjoyed the book otherwise.

But other than that, when you have a specific thing you're avoiding you know what the signs are and what to look for, and you can generally glean it from reviews, interviews, articles, parental guides, and so forth.
