Don't know that I agree with this. Even if you have a large cast, if the reader goes into it knowing there's going to be a character death, they're going to be on the lookout for it and will probably expect it as soon as a character is put in peril.

Not saying that's a good or bad thing. I think it can be good or bad depending on what the writer is going for. But I know that if I'm reading a multi-character fic with a death warning, and Bob ends up getting sick or volunteering for a dangerous mission, I'm going to assume Bob is the one who dies, even though the author never specified in the warning.
