I kinda think these "afterthought" females are better than exclusively female protagonists. That's because, well, just look at Lara Croft and the sort. They are objectified characters. They are hot as hell with DD cups but they still fight like men and are as strong as men. Or then they are very soft an feminine, much more compassionate and blah blah blag. They are far from realistic women. Luckily Crystal Dynamics has reformed Lara to be more realistic but this is still an usual case with female protagonists. They are often portrayed as seducers, damsels in distress and the sort.
With these "afterthought" females that's not the case. I don't care if they are just "men with boobs", at least the sexism isn't there. They aren't the type that "Oh, we'll totally have to make sure that this is FEMALE and females act like this!"
