If you want something to be written from the female perspective first, then who gets to decide what the Authentic Female Experience is? And would it even be possible for the Authentic Female Experience to be written sans any sexist assumptions (having a woman write it doesn't solve that problem, by the way)?

It's not enough to just say, "the dialogue would be different" and "the relationships would be different." How would they be different? And why do they have to be different in that particular way in order for you to find it realistic? Do you think women always think and act in certain ways, regardless of experience, upbringing, or society?

And that brings us to what's always bothered me about the "man with boobs" criticism: it assumes that there's one kind of man and one kind of woman, and never the twain shall meet. I'm a rather "masculine" woman, so when people say "the default is male, and this female character is modeled after the default, so she's not a real woman" I just want to scream. The default is male because there's a certain set of traits that we've coded as male and that we've discouraged women from adopting, not because only men can ever be that way. And the way I see it, part of fighting for equality is fighting for the recognition of gender as a construct and of gender roles as artificial.

In any case, I'll take the current incarnation of FemShep, thanks. I relate to her, and something tells me I wouldn't relate to the kind of female protagonist that you seem to think would be "correct."
