I've never even heard of that.

I just thought Dave was on crack in his free time.

Power Up comics is definitely a more pointed satire, but I'm not really sure you can compare the two on those merits since SBaHJ isn't actually trying to be a smart parody or do anything, really, beyond being a meta attachment to Homestuck proper. It's funny because it's so utterly terrible and irreverent, while P^U is funny because it's accurate criticism.

Actually, the reason I find SBaHJ funnier is because P^U is so good a parody that it actually kind of creeps me out and leaves me with a gross feeling in the pit of my stomach because the aspect of gamer culture it's commenting on really bothers me. :/

/delicate flower?????

Also I can't believe I commented so pretentiously about intentionally bad webcomics. (~-_-)~

[identity profile] vazavati.livejournal.com 2011-06-07 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
Well, you saved me the trouble of having to do so. xD I've only read a little of P^U, but SBaHJ is definitely more up my street for the reasons you mentioned. Hilariously terrible is more fun than acutely cringeworthy.

...though I probably wouldn't have even read something like SBaHJ had it not been connected to Homestuck, regardless.

also on a Homestuck note I should say that I, um, completely adore your fanfiction >> ♥

I can kind of follow what you're saying here. For those who like Harry Potter fic, P^U is more like My Immortal, where as SBaHJ is more like HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH?

[identity profile] fruitsandwich.livejournal.com 2011-06-07 06:56 am (UTC)(link)
Nothing to do with the topic at hand, really but thank you so much for reminding me of HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! I haven't read it in years and it is still my favorite Harry Potter fic.

Absolute. Favorite.

[identity profile] vazavati.livejournal.com 2011-06-07 07:48 am (UTC)(link)
...I had no idea what HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH was until just now and I'm reading it and oh my god where has this been all my life.

The thing is I don't think it's even that effective as parody because it doesn't even approach the level of badness that's out there in webcomic form. Where P^U succeeds is in taking the tropes and cliches of gamer webcomics and creating this incredibly funny anti-humor out of them, getting comedy from terrible art and ineffective writing and just making it so bad that it's incredibly funny. I definitely think that Powerup succeeds more as a legitimately funny thing than as a parody (although it has parodic elements).

(Anonymous) 2011-06-07 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
...okay, I give up, I'm not ironic enough for this shit, how are either of those things genius in the first place

(Anonymous) 2011-06-07 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
Powerup Comics is/was fucking awesome. God dammit if you don't find that hilarious. I've never really dug SBAHJ and uh. Yeah, basically I agree with you here. Not as funny as Powerup was.

Nothing as good as the President Bush PU. NOTHING.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-07 06:51 am (UTC)(link)
:O I am just here to be surprised someone else posted a P^U secret the same week I did.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-07 09:18 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, this shitty webcomic is better than that other shitty webcomic. ಠ_ಠ
Can't we all just enjoy the irony?

I find P^U to be utterly fascinating-- I read the whole thing in about two sittings-- but only occasionally funny in its own right, and frequently uncomfortable in subtext in a brilliantly subtle way. SBaHJ on the other hand is absolutely hilarious, but not as fascinating, because there is pretty much no subtlety, just pure lolwhat.

Different strokes etc.

Also I love that this secret exists. *___*
