don't have the balls to ship them as they are

People say this? O.o

You're all right, OP. I think humanized characters are cute and interesting.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-07 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
That art is adorable!

[identity profile] the-angry-pixie.livejournal.com 2011-06-07 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
naaaww. that art is adorable.

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2011-06-07 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
!!

I wouldn't even know how to ship a clown fish and a... Dory... fish. >___>

So, yeah, it's humanized versions all the way for me. ^^;;

Have you seen Shibu's (http://shibu.deviantart.com/gallery/?q=finding+nemo) "Finding Nemo" art?

As someone who loves humanizations (both creating and seeing other people's), keep it up, OP! I bet your versions are awesome, and forget the haters. ♥

[identity profile] stunt-muppet.livejournal.com 2011-06-07 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
Humanization-fan brofist, anon! I love the creativity and style that goes into humanizations. Nobody should make you feel bad about that.

[identity profile] heartless9.livejournal.com 2011-06-07 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
Really? they say that?
Well, not to worry OP, there's a lot of people who think humanized characters are awesome!
I think it's cool because I love seeing how people would think that a non-human character would look like.

[identity profile] fly-buggy-fly.livejournal.com 2011-06-07 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
As a person who sometimes likes my giant robots in human bodies, I can sympathize with you, OP <3

Don't stop because of some haters.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-07 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
UNF HUMAN!MARLIN.

... gdi.

[identity profile] cloud-riven.livejournal.com 2011-06-07 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
Aaaaah that art is adorable ♥ (well, aside from the side mouth, but those designs are purdy cute)

Humanizing things is fun. Especially when you can note what part of the design is a clever call back to the character source. (eg: those streaks of grey in red hair ♥♥♥)

And totally don't get the hate some people have for them either. Lately whenever I'm talking about Portal for instance, someone always has to go and redirect the conversation into some criticism of fandom for humanizing robots for shipping purposes. BIG DEAL.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-07 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
So much agreeing. I ran into this ALL the time in old fandoms. I always enjoyed humanizing animal favorites, working to get certain features just right so that they were representative of animal qualities. And people would be utterly ripshit, disgusted, 'Oh that's nice, but can you draw them as ducks/beavers/dinosaurs like they're supposed to be?' I like them for their personalities, not their sexy tails and muzzles and dorsal fins. If I want to like them for more, they've got to be human. Or at least close to.

I would never alter an ugly human character to be more attractive to suit my tastes, but changing a fish into a person is not so much shallow as COMPLETELY understandable. I don't want to draw fish sex, or ducks macking it. I think it's insane to question that need to tread some familiar territory. Even very anthropomorphic animal characters. If I want to do anything with them out of the realm of jungle adventures, and undersea frolicking... hey, it's not hurting anyone. To each his own, in both directions. If furry-anything is your thing, I do not judge. But you very rarely see animalized human characters getting the same flack.

Also- that picture is magnificent. The expressions, and obviously the hair and clothing choice. I also greatly enjoy the choice to make Dory taller- exactly: she is a larger fish. This creativity is something to be celebrated.

If it makes you feel any better anon, I ship a pumpkin and a snowball (http://media.giantbomb.com/uploads/1/12478/781241-jackbros_super.jpg). I've seen human versions of them and drawn a few myself, but I've been afraid to share with anyone. And now I've outed myself as a dirty rotten Jackshipper.

[identity profile] cloud-riven.livejournal.com 2011-06-07 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
wait what you mean that isn't normally done? oh no i don't want to be dirty and rotten i want to be clean and fresh in fandom why jackship why do i have to love you D:

So was it just me or someone else read this secret in Dory's voice?

[identity profile] singeaddams.livejournal.com 2011-06-07 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
I saw some My Little Pony: Friendship Blah Blah humanizations over on JournalFen's Equestria comm and was completely impressed with the artistry. Seems a perfectly valid form of fan appreciation to me.

And your Nemo and Dory are fantastic!

[identity profile] omorka.livejournal.com 2011-06-07 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
. . . I don't see how this is different from any other AU or why anyone would be upset about it. o_0 If people can write giant robots as high school students, you have every right to draw talking fish as people.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-07 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
Who drew that picture? It's adorable! I absolutely love the grey hair - it's such a clever way of showing his age while doing a callback to the original character!

I don't see any problem with humanizations, even if you aren't shipping them. I think the character design element is a lot of fun...

Humanazation-art is fun. Just because you draw a non-human character as a human doesn't mean you don't like them in their original form.

[identity profile] falconwhitaker.livejournal.com 2011-06-07 08:53 am (UTC)(link)
Haters gonna hate, OP. You just keep having fun, rocking the house and doing what you want to do like a freakin' boss :D

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2011-06-07 10:16 am (UTC)(link)
People complain about this? To the point of rage? That's effin' ridiculous, man. I find that kind of art interesting and I didn't even know there was a name for it much less an effin' BACKLASH. People, go get another hobby besides finding something ridiculous to complain about.

I'm reminded of Wendy Pini's art where she took one of her own original characters and drew what one character would have looked like if the whole epic had been an underwater tale and she were a mermaid. What, is that disrespectful of the character?

I could get into a whole thing on how these are anthropomorphized animals, which are not a "pure" animal creation and invite the speculation, but the concept shouldn't even need defense. Whether someone finds it not their thing, not consistent with their own vision of the characters, or even uncomfortable, well, those are individual criticisms, but don't try to dismiss it all as lazy and insulting to the source material.

(Icon related--yes, I've written fishslash of them AS FISHES and I'm certainly not about to insist art can't do other things with them. Cripes.)

[identity profile] spadessssslick.livejournal.com 2011-06-07 05:21 pm (UTC)(link)
That art is SO GREAT asfakhfuajahfu

That said, adding my thoughts with some coherency: I don't know why people would get upset over human AUs. This is coming from someone who does have the balls to ship characters as non-humans (good god I am GIANT ROBOT FANDOM, and in Keroro Gunso fandom where I ship humans with alien frogs and alien frogs with each other), but humanizing characters can be really fun. Agreeing with what some people above have said, it's just another form of AU.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-07 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
can i have link of that image...
I sooo want to stalk that artist!

[identity profile] occreater.livejournal.com 2011-06-09 07:37 am (UTC)(link)
That picture is so cute and creative! To hell with those who think that it's not ballsy, I think it looks amazing.
