What the fuck kind of a response is this?

I think what they mean is that there are people who feel themselves to be a bit unusual or quirky, who read about the condition, take a few quizzes, and then start declaring that they too are afflicted with Asperger's Syndrome, when they have not gotten a professional opinion at any point.

That said, I do agree the original question could sound harsh and jarring to someone who has been officially diagnosed and had to deal with the issue for many years.

P.S.
I love your icon! Yummy!

I get what you're saying, thanks for taking the time to explain that viewpoint.

Bah, I guess it's a sore spot, not because I have Asperger's but because I'm all too familiar with mental illness and the stigmas etcetc. Some people that don't suffer from depression, for example, like to pretend that it doesn't exist or that people are too obsessed with pills and the like, when they have no idea what they're talking about. I assumed this type of thing was what the anon was saying :P

Hehe.. thanks! I love macarons :3

The problem with this line of thinking is that getting a professional opinion isn't as easy as people think- even if you have the time and money and resources to get an eval, many places won't even look at adults. Self-diagnosis is sometimes the only diagnosis available.

Which doesn't mean that people appropriating the term based on vaguely resembling some stereotype aren't being shitty, but that's less because of the lack of professional labels and more because it's along the lines of "oh, I like my house tidy I must be OCD".

The typical response whenever the subject comes up, unfortunately.
