Now that I think about it, I am curious to know the reason why this was done with male superheroes, if there is any.

Most likely it was so that you could see their muscles better. But when women show off their musculature, that's OMG SCANDALOUS.

To be fair... Some of the time Most of the time, no muscle is actually defined on female bodies*, unlike with males. :3

Actually, and someone correct me if I'm wrong, but most (male?) superhero costumes, and I'm thinking Superman specifically, were based on the old circus "strongman" trope, as in a huge guy at a circus who could lift absurd amounts of weight. The costumes are very reminiscent of the types of spandexy kind of things they would wear, both for more mobility and eyecandy.

Yup. The idea was that they were athletic and doing absurd flips and such, so they wore the sorts of things that acrobats and strongmen would wear at the time. Why they're still wearing them now is a little unclear, but that's where the generic superhero costume comes from. It's even semi-referenced in Spider-Man's origin story - that was originally a wrestling costume, complete with luchador mask.

And now I suddenly feel so much better about Robin's otherwise anachronistic (for Batman) costume.
