I get how it could feel that way. ^^;; I guess my problem was knowing that, despite everything, he still killed himself, and that the writers didn't/couldn't change it because that's what the real Vincent did. So, even if the Doctor was real, it wouldn't matter, and that's what killed me. Metaphorically speaking, of course. ^^;;

The way I saw it, the Doctor and Amy *did* matter, and that's what made me cry more than anything. Like the Doctor said the The Lazarus Experiment, "some people live more in 20 years than others do in 80"; he still didn't lead a long life, but the Doctor and Amy brought a happiness to it/added to his pile of good things, and that definitely mattered.

Funny, that's kind of what killed it for me (um, honestly no pun intended here either) - he takes him to this future where he's The Greatest Artist of All Time, then dumps him back to a place where peasants throw stones at him and no-one cares about his work. It's plausible that the Doctor actually wound up causing his suicide but I highly doubt the writers meant it that way.

Or if they wanted to keep the fact that he committed suicide historically but still wanted that scene with Bill Nighy (and let's be honest, who wouldn't want a scene with Bill Nighy?) they could have had some fun with divergent timelines, with one past where he kills himself and one where he doesn't? I don't know. The whole thing just didn't hang together for me and it seemed like the only reason for that museum scene was to wring a few tears from the cold hearts of cynical harpies like me. Especially scored by that Athlete song. Come on now.

But hey, this is all just my opinion and I've been as deeply affected by other episodes as you were by this one. Father Octavian's death gets me every time.
