Well, to be fair, I think this anon is mainly saying that that it's the author that makes the decision in what costume to use and writes that into the story.

But still, I don't think that liking the old costume= BAD PERSON. I don't follow comics, but the old costume looks a lot easier to kick ass in..

Yeah, that's basically what I am saying. I'm not invested in this costume change either way, but I am so sick of seeing this argument about choice applied to fictional characters. It completely hinders any kind of discussion, either form a critical perspective or a social issues one.

[identity profile] writerserenyty.livejournal.com 2011-06-07 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
I can respect that. If everything was always "it's the character's choice" then nothing would get done on a critical standpoint. That's a legit point.

[identity profile] la-petite-singe.livejournal.com 2011-06-07 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
Well, OK, obviously it's the writers' choices we're really talking about, but it doesn't make any sense to say "she's not real, so that invalidates the conversation." They made the decision 'for' her and we're supposed to believe that it's the choice that this character, whom we've gotten to know over many years, would make.

But more than that, making wild generalizations about people purely based on their opinions relating to a (fictional) woman's sexuality is anti-feminist. Pure and simple.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-07 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
Look, I'm not judging anyone, but the motives of fictional characters can and should be questioned in a way that it would be inappropriate to do to a real woman.

[identity profile] la-petite-singe.livejournal.com 2011-06-07 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
In a literal, specific sense, sure, but if you take the broad point that the OP was making, that simply not having a problem with a powerful woman wearing sexualized clothing makes you a bad feminist, then that does apply to the real world, and it's problematic. The reason(s) for which she [the writers] chose to change it back are worth discussion on their own, but the point is that the OP is making broad generalizations and that's not cool.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-07 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
And that's a fine point to make, but it can't be made by saying it's the character's choice and she can do what she wants. If that wasn't your point, I apologize; that was how I read your post.
