I'm pretty sure both the male and female superhero costumes were based off of circus costumes. It's even explicitly canon with Robin.

However, while Robin and Wonder Woman showed off an equal amount of leg originally, as decades go by Robin has gained coverage, while Wonder Woman has lost it. And that latter doesn't make much since, because I'm pretty sure going all away around the cheek (unlike her more recent costumes, including the one in the secret) is part of how the in real life circus costumes kept the fabric in place.

What is nice about the picture in the secret is that her boots look flat-heeled. Yay!
