I agree with this secret, especially vis-a-vis Tamahome. Who went from lovable rogue to generic shoujo boyfriend.

(Though I was rooting for Hotohori back when who Miaka would be with was unclear, and... never came around to shipping them very much, even though they're canon.)

I completely agree. Hotohori/Miaka (or really anyone but Tamahome/Miaka)was waaaaaay more interesting, and I was an avid Hotohori/Noriko shipper.

I have to agree with this. I like both Tamahome and Miaka, but not so much together.

I think that Yuu Watase's really been improving on how she does her romances, and part of the problem before was that they happened too fast. FY is a great example of this. I really wish they had taken longer to get together.

After a while, I considered the main lovestory to just be the vehicle on which all of the other seishi (the other gods included) were delivered. "Bluh bluh, Tamahome and Miaka are talking again, bluuuuuuhhhhhh OMG CHICHIRI IS BACK ON SCREEN YAY Okay Tamahome and Miaka need to advance the plot more so we can see Nakago again!"

lol pretty much exactly this. I was SO BORED watching Miaka and Tamahome. So I basically watched to squee whenever Nuriko, Tasuki, Chichiri, or Hotohori-without-Miaka-in-scene came on the screen. And occasionally Amiboshi. Or Suboshi. Or Soi. I WAS NOT THAT PICKY.

In other news, omg nostalgic secret is nostalgic. FY was one of my First Great Fandom Loves. ♥ I knew all the character image songs by heart~

Honestly, I found Miaka to ne boring and whiny as a character and...well. That may have been, at least in part, because of the way Tamahome/Miaka was played out in the manga. It did always make me sad that Chiriko got little to no development through out the series though.

I never liked Miaka but I agree about Tamahome. He turned into a whiny drone once he fell for Miaka. And it pissed me off whenever the other characters talked about his and Miaka's relationship ALL THE TIME. Don't they have something more important to worry about than whether or not their Mary Sue priestess is going to end up marrying her boyfriend?

Agreed. I really liked Tamahome a lot, but then he became generic shoujo boyfriend. If he had kept his somewhat conceited and very greedy personality during the romance, I would have liked that more.

(though I'm ridiculously forgiving when it comes to characterization and Yuu Watase because FY was my first manga ever and so I have a soft spot for stuff by her)

I think this is why I wound up preferring other characters over Miaka and Tamahome. Neither they nor their romance really attracted me to FY - it was, again, the other characters and the main plot regarding summoning gods and all that stuff.

God, so true. I read the first volume and the seventh back to back once, and it was like character whiplash in the worst way. That said, Miaka's changes were somewhat believable. Tamahome's... not so much. But that's just a general Watase problem, really.

I wasn't that focused on the romance. I was more interested in the plot and the things that the other characters were doing, so it wasn't a real turn-off for me. At the same time, by the time it was nearing the end, I was rooting for them. I hoped that they would find a way to be together.

Awwww, FY. <3 Admittedly their relationship is rather boring, but for me I read the series way back when I didn't care about shipping, so I only read it for the plot. xD;

Then of course I read FY: Genbu Kaiden and I ship Uruki/Takiko so much more than I shipped anything in the original. XD;;
