I never got the impression that Asuka and Shinji were all that close. It seemed like she just kind of latched onto him because he was there and she was lonely (and sore about getting shot down by Kaji).

Then again, it's been ages since I saw that show, so I could be forgetting something?

I don't think so. They had a complex relationship, but I never felt that they were close

For me, it felt like they had a sort-of family with Misato. I mean, it was complicated, and they had complicated feelings for each other, but I felt something was there.
