I do get a little annoyed every time something reminds me that people actually consider football a sport, yeah.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-10 02:59 pm (UTC)(link)
So what does qualify as a sport then? Honest question here. Because if you break it down to the basics it's all about

who runs faster
who jumps higher/longer
who throws something farther away
who scores a goal/puts the ball in the basket/ doesn't let their opponent catch the ball
who lifts the heaviest weight
etc.

AND I LOVE THEM ALL. Sorry, I just don't get being elitist about sports I guess. Football/soccer is just more mainstream, at least in Europe.

[identity profile] anthropomorphe.livejournal.com 2011-06-10 04:43 pm (UTC)(link)
That's the point, though. With other sports, there are many rules, and it's incredibly difficult to score and/or win.

Take hockey; a tiny goal hardly any bigger than the goalie, ice skating everywhere, incredibly dangerous, you need excellent teamwork skills...

Then tennis; it's hard to hit the ball with the right amount of strength, quick reactions, constant practice, great running skills, endurance...

Basketball is in a small court with rules about where people are allowed to go, who they're allowed to touch, it's stupidly hard to get the ball in the basket, again, teamwork...

Do I need to go on?

Football is just kicking a ball. And running up and down a giant field. ...No, actually, the field isn't even that big. The players don't even seem to get along, and the goalie might as well not even be there. Even toddlers are good at it, so why should anybody be considered "flawless" at something so stupidly uncomplicated?

It's too easy and simple to be a sport. Nobody would take me seriously if I lifted an apple said, hey, that weighs something, what a good weightlifter I am!

And I know. I live in England. Just because something is mainstream does not mean it's in any way good.

Sorry for lateness but I just discovered this by coincidence (I don't really read f!s)

Anyway I found this interesting because I don't agree at all. Sure in the end it's all about running across a field and kicking the ball into the opponents net while not getting scored against.

But there are rules, and it's not as easy as it seems otherwise I'd expect the results being more like in hockey with idk 4 goals and 6 goals, but the average in football is something like 2 goals per game iirc which isn’t that much so it’s not that easy is it?
As for the goalkeepers, they are game-savers and can carry a whole team on their shoulders, and imo they don't get nearly all the attention they deserve. People only remember their mistakes which sucks.
On your point that "The players don't even seem to get along", I could spam you with loads of players actually getting along (and glomping each other, hugging, joking and etc), but I don't have them saved here and idek how to. So I don't really know where that came from (of course not all players get along and of course there are fights but it's not that usual.)
I don't know if you watch football, but I do and more often than not I'm impressed by what happens on the field and the skill that is showcased. But mostly by the teamwork because football is all about the team.

Sorry for the long rant, but as you see I just found this interesting and wanted to reply properly and then my mind (and my fingers!) kind of ran away with it. I don't really expect you to read all that :)

No, it just means they're fucking awful at running and kicking, which we ALL know is a very difficult thing to do.

As for the goalkeepers, they are game-savers and can carry a whole team on their shoulders, and imo they don't get nearly all the attention they deserve. People only remember their mistakes which sucks.

The net is FOUR TIMES BIGGER THAN THEM. They make absolutely NO DIFFERENCE.

(and glomping each other, hugging, joking and etc),

And eating each others balls after managing to finally kick the tiny ball into that huge net with the goalie that is 1/4 its size.

I don't know if you watch football,

I live in the U.K. It's practically the only sport anyone watches, which is a shame because TENNIS AND NADAL AND DJOKOVICH AND FEDERER ):

And hockey.

I don't really expect you to read all that :)

Of course I'm going to read it. Why wouldn't I? Also, don't worry about the lateness, I don't mind at all.

(That was me above, I forgot/was to lazy to log in)

"The net is FOUR TIMES BIGGER THAN THEM. They make absolutely NO DIFFERENCE."

Which is why it is so impressive when they manage to make a save and make all the difference. I love my team but sometimes the defence is this close to giving me a heart attack and the goalie is the only thing standing in the way and the only reason I don't go losing my sanety conpletely lol (my Twitter TL is evidence of this)

Idk football just makes me really happy so it doesn't bother me that much, but I can definitely see how the seemingly never-ending coverage can be annoying

We'll just have to agree to disagree.

Btw, I've just started to get in to tennis after I watched the final of the French Open between Nadal and Federer. It seems really exciting
