That could have been interesting.

i like this idea a lot.

It would have been really interesting to have the series set then. I hope there's fic of it sometime!

About what you said about "who ever has real romantic feelings at age seven, anyway?"...actually, I did. At age six, actually. It was the only time I've really fallen for anyone. But I moved away when I was about eight, so I never saw him again and got over it.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-11 04:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh come on, let's be honest, that would be infatuation or puppy love. Real love comes from forging a relationship through communication and learning about your partner. Sure, there's stuff like love-at-first-sight and such, but those are almost always LUST that eventually LEAD to love. Your young relationship could have blossomed into love one day, but was most likely in an early idyllic stage of infatuation.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-11 05:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Different anon, but...do you know the person who wrote that comment? Maybe for you, what you say it's true, and that's perfectly fine. For you.

Also, I feel the need to say that love is not only romantic.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-12 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
The secret is talking about "romantic feelings", idiot, not specifying the type. And what you say is equally applicable to most adult relationships, too.

But that said, you have no idea what my feelings were, unless you're claiming to be psychic or a ghost-like projection of my subconscious meandering through the net.

asexuals can fall in love without ever having a lustful thought.
ext_81845: screencap of dusty attenborough with a thoughtful expression, also STUBBLE, from legend of the galactic heroes (think it over)

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2011-06-11 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
I agree, OP. That actually sounds like a much better premise for a series.

[identity profile] i-paint-the-sky.livejournal.com 2011-06-11 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
I think they both would be equally interesting. There definitely is a lack of anime with main characters who are adults, rather than teens (or at least adults older than their early twenties). And I'm still in my twenties too so it's not just older fans who notice this.

Still, I do love the characters and I think the fact that the show is exploring parent/child relationships in the way that it does did need the characters to still be teens.

[identity profile] doktordeathray.livejournal.com 2011-06-11 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
My thoughts exactly!
I do think it's possible to experience romantic feelings at that age, but I'd still enjoy the show more if they were college age.

[identity profile] cowgirlmaxwell.livejournal.com 2011-06-11 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
good idea, actually!

I think it's ok that they have romantic feelings at 6/7, problem is that it is weighted SO MUCH and there is SO MUCH emphasis and importance put on a crush that seems kinda silly.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-11 04:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's not like it's impossible to have crushes and feelings of love at that age, but I always feel weirded out when so much importance is put on the fact that OMG you are twu wuvvers because you liked each other as kids! YOU'RE MEANT TO BE TOGEVVAH!

It's like yikes, your 6-year old self could have liked someone because of the awesome mud pies he made, a basis for a great lifelong love story it is not.

[identity profile] firstmoonie.livejournal.com 2011-06-11 10:14 am (UTC)(link)
I think that's why I didn't start to series.Am I doing wrong?

(Anonymous) 2011-06-11 10:26 am (UTC)(link)
01. I agree that anime in general is pretty much "TEENAGERS. LOOK AT ALL OF THE TEENAGERS."

But I also think it's pretty justified in Anohana. I think it would certainly be interesting if it were about them in their later years, but I also think it would be a totally different story. I think teenage years are very emotional, so it makes sense to set it then - and I also think that adults might have already coped pretty easily. Jintan is kind of a shut in and Anaru is dealing with high school drama. Everyone DOESN'T always act maturely in this series, and they're awkward and they lash out. I like that.

I mean I guess Anaru could struggle with OFFICE DRAMA, but what about the whole social pressure of her fashion choices and the love hotel and - basically all that would be lost if she were an adult.

I also think that parenthood has been a kind of subtle running theme that would be lost a lot if they were older, unless they all still lived with their parents or something... Jintan's dad, Menma's mother who is upset and a plot-point because she's upset that they're teenagers who still get to play around.

It would really just change everything.

I don't mean for any of that to sound rude, just kind of rambled... I really do think it would be very interesting, but I also think it would be a totally different series, and if it WAS the same, would become very flawed in ways Anohana isn't. (Not to say Anohana isn't flawed as is, just, you know. Differently.)

As a side note, I had crushes when I was that age, and at the time, they're the same thing.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-11 10:47 am (UTC)(link)
I misread the synopsis for the series (... many, many times, apparently) and thought they actually were around that age - cue a weird "huh" when I start watching the series and they're high school aged. I think it could have been really interesting if they were older, but I think it works pretty well the way it is for the same reasons mentioned up-thread.

About the age thing though - are they supposed to first years? Jinta once mentioned how he failed to get into Yukiatsu and Tsuruko's school, like it happened recently. Japanese first years are what, 15? So they already had the whole puppy-love drama going on from when they were 5?
Maybe it's just because I can't remember much from when I was 5, but woah.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-11 05:02 pm (UTC)(link)
It's the Japanese romatization of the concept of the 'life-long love story' - it's everywhere in anime. How many stories can you think of that involve a guy and his 'best friend from childhood' who is a rambunctious girl? And these stories are always a 'will-they won't-they' romance.

Even in Sailor Moon where in the R movie they retconned the entire fucking story to show that Usagi met Mamoru as kids and was nice to him and became an important memory for him because OMG TWU WUUUUUV.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-11 04:59 pm (UTC)(link)
The problem I see is the blatant fanservice, visual and emotional. If it dropped that otaku-pandering crap, I think it would be quite a good show even with teenagers.

Have you tried to watch Honey & Clover? It sounds like you'd enjoy it a lot!

(Anonymous) 2011-06-11 05:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Welcome to realizing that there is almost no anime about your age group. Manga, yes, there is tons of manga about being an adult (although I would argue that for every one cool adult manga, there's 20 dramatic teenage schoolgirl dramas), but anime and cartoons in general it's all teenagers. Fuck, Ariel was 16 in The Little Mermaid. Rapunzel, at 18, has been the oldest Disney princess to date. THAT'S some shit right there.

You'd think your life ends after you become an adult, what with the lack of media about it. Welp, pack it in folks, once you hit your mid-20's you're doomed to be a boring person who has no adventures and isn't worth telling stories about.

Luckily, American television shows have plenty of adult characters, so I get my fix there.

Anime ages in general tend to skew young. Ever see Utena? I was watching it with my gf the other day and she blew my mind when she pointed out that the main character is supposed to be fourteen. Um, yeah.

Generally, I mentally add +5 to +10 years to most anime characters. It helps with my sanity.
