Even if so, it wouldn't affect the validity of her argument. To argue otherwise is ad hominem circumstantial, akin to arguing that Mark's opposition to the word should be discounted because he gets attention if he goes social justice crusading.

NGL - I love Mark's blogs, but so much of his PC stuff feels so much like "I'm trying really hard to show everyone how ~enlightened I am." Not because he's actually bothered by any of it, but because it's so very cool to be so very uptight about being absolutely correct and respectful all the time.

And, yeah, also someone who's never been banned or chastised or had a comment removed.

his reviews are pretty entertaining (he reads/watches without knowing too much about the content and reviews by chapter/episode). but i go agree with the secret, his PC-ness is a little much.

Actually, hispanic, gay and no not rich. But there's an interesting contrast of his desire for his blog to be a 'safe' non-judgemental space and the rabid attack dogs that are his devotees for any use of 'bad' words.

I like his blogs, but stay away from the commentary.

I have no idea who this guy is but I'm also bipolar and use the word "crazy" all the time. So I guess I'm ableist against myself or some shit.

I have fucking paranoid personality disorder and I call myself crazy all the time. It pisses me right the fuck off when people without mental illness try to tell me how I can and cannot refer to myself.

I'll call myself crazy if I damn well please.

No one should be telling you that you can't self identify as crazy and I'm pretty sure that's not what Mark is doing either. He's just trying to create a safe place for himself and others that don't feel comfortable with that word being used as a slur against other people.

I was thinking about this the other day, and I pretty much agree with you. "Crazy" has changed in the same way "dumb" has. For the most part, you don't really see it used to describe people with legitimate mental illnesses anymore. I almost always see it used to describe extreme weird behavior. Sometimes I see it used to describe people with mental illnesses, and it's sad, but that's pretty uncommon. It's just not worth letting it bother you.

I can't believe this thread. Mark has explained why he personally does not like that word. It was used against him many times while he was dealing with depression and it makes him uncomfortable. He's not doing this just to be some trendy SJ warrior. He doesn't comment on every mention of it in whatever he's reading or watching and discussions about it don't happen as much as people seem to think they do. I think it's amazing that he's trying to create such a safe place on his blog.

I don't care if everyone thinks he's being too sensitive or preachy. Words are powerful and some people are really affected by them. Just because you have whatever disability/disorder and are not affected by an ableist slur that does not mean that other people aren't. Self identify as crazy all you want, but don't dismiss other people's personal experiences and feelings with that word.

Mark is the least offensive person I know, if you've read a lot of his reviews, more importantly, if you've read what he writes about his own life story and all the shit he's been through maybe you would understand where he's coming from. He's not trying to act enlightened or impress anyone.

OP should lay off the term "manic-depressive". The correct term is bipolar. As for the secret itself, it depends on the person. Maybe you personally aren't offended by the word "crazy", but many people with mental illness are, especially when it's used by other people referring to them.

I do agree about bitch, though. Again, some people do find it offensive, but that's taking it a little too far IMO.
