Honestly, in a lot of ways I think both their positions are problematic. But weirdly, I think they're problematic in such ways that if they'd ever actually managed to meet a common ground in the middle - assimilation and government registration are bad, but so is killing innocent people or purposefully altering their DNA - I'd be right on board.

Yes, this. I saw the film earlier today, and having had a few hours to dwell on it, I think the real tragedy of the film is that Erik didn't let Charles help reign in Erik's worst tendencies and ALSO that Charles didn't let Erik help reign in Charles's worst tendencies. I think Erik was totally right to call Charles on his arrogance in assuming that he could set things up so people would just accept mutants as heroes. But likewise I think Charles was right to try to restrain Erik's violent methods.

That's why it's hard to pick sides, for me. I just want a compromise approach!
