This. A misogynistic, male-dominated setting does not mean that the writing is misogynistic. (Although, as rough and cruel as that world is for women, I still think that GRRM sometimes spared his female characters things that would most likely have happened to them ... Brienne, Arya, Sansa all not getting raped, despite being constantly in situations where it could easily have happened?)

This. Plus I don't know where the wish-fulfillment comes from - pretty much everyone in the series gets disillusioned from any of their romanticism, and as a result, the reader does too. And yeah, ASOIAF actually deals with the effects of this deeply patriarchal society on women, particularly with Cersei, Sansa, and Brienne. Male wish-fulfillment stories would not deal with these issues at all.

The trouble is to find these stories you would have to actually read the books, not just watch a handful of episodes of the tv series or skim the first few chapters or read a review on a website. Much easier to do the latter and dismiss it as sexist tosh and be smug about it.

And this is actually one of the things I love most about the series. Various female characters actually think and talk about rape, sexism (Cersei's "If I had been born with a cock..." musings), lack of choices. We see what happens to them and GRRM doesn't write it as titillating or even shrug it off as "just the way things are"--he actually has them think, sometimes aloud, about how fucked up it is. I think he's actually trolled the fanboy misogynist types pretty successfully. He's given them this epic story but then instead of just the usual supporting roles, he's made most of the more compelling characters female, given them incredible character arcs, and laid out all the horrendous shit they have to go through due to their sex in black and white, as part of the story.

Of course, there are those who still manage to ignore it because they're just that dedicated to their misogyny. Eh. Fuck 'em.
