I think the Mistborn Trilogy is pretty good.

[identity profile] ariseishirou.livejournal.com 2011-06-11 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
Never read it. Will give it a shot?

[identity profile] twilightedge.livejournal.com 2011-06-11 03:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, you might like it. =) It's set in a post-apocalyptic world (not modern though) where ash rains constantly and there are people who are mist born and there are others who can only control one metal. It's a really interesting fantasy take on having a power, and there's some physics involved too haha, so I like that. It's by Brandon Sanderson. He's best known for helping finish the Wheel of Time series after the author passed away a few years ago.

(Oh hey, I know you! :D)

I was about to say this! I'll add Warbreaker to that. Two of the three POVs are kickass ladies, and neither is objectified! (Which is something I like about Brandon Sanderson's works in general--I don't get the creepy feeling that I'm looking into his id.)

[identity profile] twilightedge.livejournal.com 2011-06-12 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
You do? o_o; From where?

And yeah I did enjoy Warbreaker but I didn't like the ending. I thought he dawdled a bit in the middle and could have spent more time with the younger and older sister because their sudden character development seemed a bit quick since it was towards the end. I might be appeased if there's a sequel haha.

But yes I like that about his work as well. =)

[identity profile] regendy.livejournal.com 2011-06-12 06:44 am (UTC)(link)
[livejournal.com profile] westerosorting, I think? Unless I am mixing up icons, in which case, apologies for the creeping!

Yeah, agreed on all counts. The ending's big plot twist wasn't done nearly as well as the ones in Mistborn, and I really wish Siri and Vivenna interacted more. Vivenna spent the whole book trying to find her, and we got... one conversation. I expected them to get in touch much sooner and for misunderstandings to ensue!

[identity profile] elspethdixon.livejournal.com 2011-06-11 08:00 pm (UTC)(link)
The author's a proudly homophobic Mormon.

[identity profile] twilightedge.livejournal.com 2011-06-12 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I didn't know that and I haven't read that in his works, so it shouldn't have any bearing on trying out a series by him, I think.

[identity profile] elspethdixon.livejournal.com 2011-06-12 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
I'm glad you can enjoy his writing in spite of that, and you're right, it probably won't make a difference to most people, but personally, discovering that about him ruined his writing for me.

[identity profile] relmneiko.livejournal.com 2011-06-12 10:09 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh, I hate it when that happens; I can never read their stuff again. Reminds me of another author I won't name, for fear you won't be able to read his books anymore (they're actually pretty good, despite the fact that the author is a douchebag).

[identity profile] twilightedge.livejournal.com 2011-06-12 03:24 pm (UTC)(link)
The thing that ruins his writings for me is the constant questioning of faith that seems to be constant in his works. It wasn't so bad in Mistborn but Warbreaker (that and the non-ending) made me a bit hesitant to try out his latest series The Stormlight Archives. We'll see....

And yeah, that's why I don't learn much about my favourite actors or authors because then it'll make me not want to read their works. So, I learn about them through their works and then maybe research them. Sometimes it doesn't affect me and other times it does. I'm sorry it turned you off for him. =(

He is making another Mistborn book...so we'll see. I hope that doesn't ruin the one series I like from him.
