If you're going to make a fantasy world where there are zombies in the north and fossilised dragon eggs come back to life, then it wouldn't really hurt suspension of belief to have a world where women are not rape-fodder victimised at every turn.

If they are victimised in the same way that the male characters are, then fine.

Hardly EVERY TURN, dude. I recall a significant number of female characters who remain unraped and this is after being in all kinds of situations where I was terrified it was about to happen. And like I said, it's a fantasy-infused version of the late Middle Ages, they raped women like CRAZY back then. You don't even know. It is truly hideous. Maybe I'm just history-nerding out, but the books are actually going easy on the realism in this area.

I've not read the book, but re: Middle Ages and rape, I've got the Oxford Book of Ballads and it rather startled me at least one of the ballads involves the lost love proving herself to be the hero's one and only by reminding him how he took her virginity against her will that one time. Seriously what?

Agreed. As much as I enjoy the books, this sentiment is never far from my mind.
