And if I were in a position to have to make that choice, it's safe to assume that all those people you named (parents, friends) have shunned me, are disgusted by me, and don't want me around. That's the whole point. That the people who follow Erik are the people who have been cast aside by people who are supposed to love them and accept them for who they are.
And the OP doesn't mention all of the X-verse, just the one of the movie. In which Erik is flawed and fucked up but his standpoint logically follows from his experiences. Whereas Charles is a self-righteous, insensitive (look at how he treats Raven), privileged jerkoff who wants everyone to do it his way because he says so.
They're both fucked up but at least Erik gives a proper reason, with evidence, for why people should think like him. Therefore, someone choosing to follow him, regardless of how fucking screwy that is and wrong, makes sense.
