(Anonymous) 2011-06-12 03:35 pm (UTC)(link)His problems with Raven, especially, don't seem that different from your problems with him. He doesn't get where she's coming from, so the things she does and says make him uncomfortable and he shuts her down as if she's just acting out for attention. (I think part of it's also him being a bit of a prude.) He's just had a completely different life experience than either Raven or Erik. His life was one of privilege, which made him arrogant, but I think he also just had insecurties and sore spots Raven hit, especially when she challenged him.
What I mean is, he was often a total jerk to her, but I don't think it was from lack of caring about her. Like when Raven tells him she thought it would be the two of them against the world, but Charles would never be against the world because he wanted to be part of it, she's right. That desire can be both frustrating and inspiring. Erik and Raven were right about the flaws in Charles' thinking but he was right about the flaws of their solution too.

Not at all. I don't know him. I didn't grow up right beside him, as family. If I don't understand him, it makes sense. Raven was his sister. He's known her pretty much all there lives. And there are signs that she tried to talk to him about her feelings and experiences all the time but he continually brushed her aside. Because it wasn't just that he didn't understand; he didn't even listen long enough to try to understand. His sister tried to reach out to him several times, making it very clear that something was bothering her deeply, and he brushed her aside. If that's not insensitive, then what is?
Obviously they're in two different positions, with her mutation being so obvious, but he came across as not even wanting to see her side, for all that he talked about mutations being fascinating to him.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-13 01:30 am (UTC)(link)I think that's absolutely correct, only he wasn't aware of it. I just felt like part of what was great about their relationship was that Charles *did* care about her, but could also hurt her deeply very casually because he's not just blind to what she lives with, but willfully (even if he doesn't know it) blind because it conflicts with the things he needs to believe. So the only difference growing up with her made was that it was all the more painful for her that he didn't understand---he was the person who was supposed to understand. And also growing up with him gave him a false security that if he didn't see any reason for her to be upset she couldn't be that upset.
I'm not saying it's not insensitive--it's completely insensitive. But I don't think it's an insensitivity that comes from not caring about her. I think his telling her to go with Erik is the beginning of his realizing that he's failed her, which should be the first step to being able to understand what she felt and how insensitive he was.
