Let me preface this by saying I've been in Potter fandom since 1999 - considerably before fanon Draco existed.

Now. You do realize that people like characters who aren't heroes, right? That people can enjoy characters because of their flaws? That characters are interesting because they're nuanced? That - gasp - people can even like villains? I like Draco - and have always liked him - because he is a douchebag, and a coward, and altogether a try-too-hard villain. And that's fucking allowed. You sound boring.

People are allowed to like villains, I like Draco myself even though he's a gigantic ass who's a total wuss on top of it all. OP is just stating that s/he doesn't understand how people can excuse some of his despicable behaviour.

Nope. OP said he/she didn't understand how fans could change a character, making a villain a so poor little innocent boy. And it happened with Draco.

OP quite specifically says they're addressing the part of fandom who thinks he's a poor misunderstood woobie who is only the way he is because of his parents.

I have absolutely no sympathy for any of the Malfoys, and am pissed off at JKR that they got as much sympathy in the end as they did. They should have been thrown in Azkaban. I think that if only Voldemort treated them well, they would have been unwavering in their loyalty to him. They turned against him only because of how he abused them.

And I don't feel like Draco has a kernel of good in him because he couldn't kill Dumbledore. I think it just makes him a wimp who doesn't have the courage of his convictions. Every indication is that he would have been very happy to see someone ELSE do it.

I understood the secret as OP complaining about people who excuse his behaviour via all the reasons OP stated, I didn't read it as OP criticizing people who enjoy villains... Maybe we just have different interpretations of it.

It's okay for you, me or anyone else to enjoy evil characters, but I personally find it kinda uncomfortable when people find reasons to excuse bullying, violence, rape or even murder. Some villains are extremely cool and some are even sympathetic, but their crimes/deeds are still not okay.

Except that he doesn't have the drive, ambition, charm, or big goals that make so many other villains and/or bad boys interesting. He's just an ignorant, racist bully, and that's boring and obnoxious.
