FWIW, I think he's a pathetic and ineffectual villain and I've still liked fanfics where he wasn't. What you read or write in fanfic isn't always the way you'd describe the character. Just like you might love to read dark!Harry fic and not think he's dark in canon.

Well what you read, perhaps, because that just means you're open to alternative character interpretations by others when it's done well. But one thing fanfiction authors agonize so much over is keeping everyone in character, so if you're saying cowardice is what you actually like about the character then why wouldn't you write him that way, y'know? Why woobify him if that's not even what you find interesting about the character? The secret is about people's liking of Draco being based far too much on fanon after all.

I see what you mean. Like, I think Draco's a coward and I like him, but his cowardice isn't the main draw for me. If someone said they really liked his cowardice it would be odd if they only wrote him as brave.
