While the two shows deal in somewhat similar themes, they are completely different in the way they tell those stories. Carnivale is a lot more slow-moving and atmospheric, SPN is more into action and scary monsters. Also, Carnivale is a lot more, well, cerebral.
But I do agree that it's sad if people won't even give Carnivale a chance. Because hey, they might like it. Even if it hasn't got as many pretty boys (although, honestly, there's a lot of hotness in that show), it's got gorgeous visuals, and if you're into apocalyptic stuff, you should try it.
