I think 'I got myself one of those musical cards' doesn't imply giving oneself a card in the 'I wrote in a card and then presented it to myself' way, but it does imply acquiring it oneself. The 'myself' isn't meaningless. In the specific case of the musical card, there's probably going to be an implied 'and gave it to someone else' following it:

A: Oh, hey, it was C's birthday yesterday, wasn't it? Did you do anything for her?
B: I got myself one of those musical cards. (meaning: I caused a musical card to enter my possession; implied: and then I gave it to C.)

But it's still possible, if unlikely, for it to be used solely to mean that the speaker acquired the card:

B: Hey, I got myself one of those musical cards yesterday. Know of anyone who has a birthday coming up?
A: ...why did you buy it if you didn't need it?

And that's the meaning of the phrase on its own; anything else relies on implicature from context.

I'm sorry; I'll shut up now. (And I'll also stop editing; sorry to anyone who might be tracking this thread. (AND NOW I'LL STOP USING SEMICOLONS.))

Actually the first one relies on the context of the question. Without it there's no reason to believe that someone was given the card. Seeing as the OP gave no context beyond the statement, there was no reason to assume that it was in response to any specific question because it could just as easily be an answer to 'What did you do yesterday?' as anything else.

The phrase on it's own really just means 'I got a musical card for myself', with the implication that the person bought it [and possibly, though not overly likely] gave it to themself.

Oh, I absolutely agree with you; that was what I meant by 'And that's the meaning of the phrase on its own; anything else relies on implicature from context.'

I've just tried looking up the Modern Family quote the original secret referred to, and it looks like it's 'Are you headed over to the card shop? I got myself one of those musical cards. A little more expensive, but I can swing it.' Admittedly, I don't know about the wider context, but to me that just means 'I bought one of those musical cards'.

Oh, I guess I got a little mixed up with your first example, sorry ^^;;

That's pretty much what it means to me with that context. Though, honestly, I think it probably wasn't the best example for the OP to use. -shrugs-

I get that. The 'myself' meaning he paid for the card with his own money; the implication being to give it to somebody. Where I was getting so annoyed with the comments I was seeing (and it really probably is a matter of me being some sort of giant sport-spoiling rain cloud) is that people were going bananas over the idea of a character who they thought was so whatever the new socially acceptable word for the adjective commonly referred to as lame that he buys cards for himself, presumably to make himself feel like less of a lonely ass (not like the other commenter who apparently likes to collect pretty things and I'm sure is a wonderful, non-assy person).
