There were different societal [even legal in some cases] standards, and pressures than there are now, plus sexism was much more prevalent, and acceptable, then. Not to mention the fact that most of the characters in that show would have grown up in the 40's and 50's where things were even more conservative and racism/sexism/certain pressures were even stronger. [There's also the fact that, society as a whole, was far more 'Don't ask, don't tell.' and 'Keep it in the family' than they are now.] So, looking at someone and wondering 'Why didn't they do x,y, or z' without taking those things into account *is* looking at them wrong. It would be like looking at a modern day female and thinking 'Why isn't she wearing a corset! How improper!' because it doesn't take into account the time frame, and culture, that person lived in.
