Question: Are we not allowed to care about the use of slurs now if we like anything that is problematic? Because I'm almost certain everyone does, and that 99% of media has its problems. Disregarding someone's dislike of offensive words because they enjoy something that has sexist, racist, ablist, homophobic, or transphobic elements is petty and usually hypocritical.

Are you a fan of Homestuck? If not, it would kind of be like making a comment about how wife beating jokes aren't funny, and then using an Eminem icon when you post it. Of course it's not hypocritical to listen to Eminem and be a feminist but using that specific icon is sort of . . . unaware to the point that it would make me wonder if they knew what they were talking about.

I don't think that's exactly the same. For one thing, Eminem is a real person, rather than a fictional character, who's singing about these things to be an edgy asshole, and doesn't care who he's hurting. It would be more like loving a comedian who constantly refers to women as sluts, then posting with an icon of that comedian telling someone not to call women sluts.

Karkat, however, is a fictional character who's supposed to represent an Internet troll and is intentionally written as unpleasant, without that unpleasantness being excused as a good thing (and I may be misremembering but I'm fairly sure he's the only one who's called someone a retard). I can definitely see the argument that using an icon like that mixes signals a little bit -- like using a Homestuck icon to tell someone not to call someone a bitch -- but it's not exactly hypocritical and I definitely don't think it actually invalidates their comment.

I can see both sides of the "retarded" argument but iawtc, the combination made me laugh. I think it would be really hard to enjoy homestuck if such language offended you enough to comment... Unless you're a hypocrite and only get offended when it's used against you.
