(Anonymous) 2011-06-17 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)I think there's an argument for an element of othering when it comes to Chang. He's creepy, weird and slimy. But I think if anything, it's othering of mentally unhealthy people, not Asians. Chang isn't creepy because he's Asian, he's creepy because he has no self-awareness. He's creepy because he's willing to climb through vents in his underwear to fight a monkey, which is really not an Asian stereotype. So, I don't know, if you're saying he's dehumanized to a degree, I agree with that, and it's more than anyone else in the cast gets, even more than the Dean. He is like a cartoon character kind of shoved in a cast of real people. But . . yeah none of his otherness comes from being Asian, imo.
