I don't think it really has to be. But the OP seems more annoyed at her friends' attitude that they can't enjoy a show without conventional eye candy and thus won't even give it a shot. Which I admit I would also find pretty irritating. Especially if they're the type of SPN fans I've run into who won't shut the hell up about it even after you tell them you're not interested/hate it/don't care (and often repeatedly).
