In the same manner, I (a trans woman) met a friend who was trans through a video game, which later lead to my coming out and transitioning a number of years ago. The paths to opening up to ourselves can come in strange ways, but it's no less valid to be through fandom than through say meeting a friend who has some interest in gender issues in college, at work, in a bar, or so on.
