8 - But yes I do. :)

I like the time period. I like that the war was fucked up and everyone knew it. I like that it was like a different world.

But never mind all that. The general consensus appears to be it's because I'm weird. :)

I can see why you'd be interested in it; what I don't get is why you'd want to live in it. Why would you want to live in a time when you or people you love could be drafted to go kill and be killed halfway across the world for no good reason? Why would you want to get caught up in a civil war that's really just a proxy of a conflict between two much larger forces and have to make decisions that could make the difference between life and death for you and your family--and having to make these decisions without nearly enough information? I'm not saying the world is a great place now, but if you're living in a Western nation or you're in the upper class of a developing nation, it's a much better time to be alive.

I don't get why everyone else doesn't get the idea that someone might want to live somewhere different from where or when they are, regardless of if it's better or worse, so we're even.

I'm sorry to butt in, but you're misunderstanding.

It's not that you want to live in a different time and place, it's that no one gets why you would want to subject yourself to the hell that was the Vietnam War. I assume you know what happened in there and you know the impact it left on the soldiers who fought and survived.

Post traumatic stress disorder, or so I've heard, isn't exactly an awesome thing to come into contact with.

Why do other people want to live in the hell that are some dystopian fandom worlds?

To have been there.

Their wishes are just as bizarre. I can get why people think it's interesting. Maybe it would be neat if you could experience it and tune out when it gets too hard on you, like a kind of dream sequence or something similar. But to actually want to be in it and subject yourself to the same harsh conditions and stress as the Vietnam soldiers... that strikes me as going a bit too far. Nevertheless, it's your opinion, and if you want to continue dreaming that you could go back in time to be a Vietnam veteran then whatever. It's not like you can, so you're not hurting yourself by thinking that way, and you're not hurting anyone else, so that's fine with me.

You're getting more negative responses than those who post "I want to live in x fandom world" because the Vietnam War actually happened and real people died and the effects of it can still be seen today through the survivors. Which makes it closer to home, and thus scarier.

*shrug* What I want is what I want.

PS, for not insisting that it's wrong or that you know how I feel better than me and I don't *really* want to be there, thank you.

That's not what I said. I get why people would want to live in different times; what I don't understand is why someone would want to live in a significantly worse time, specifically because they find the characteristics that make it significantly worse desirable.

because they find the characteristics that make it significantly worse desirable.

You answered your own question.

*shrug* I didn't ask anyone to understand. They're the ones asking why and telling me it's wrong to think this way.

Well, to telescope a bit, I don't see why anyone would find those things desirable to personally experience. I doubt we can see eye to eye on this though, so I suppose we may as well just agree to consider each other crazy :)
