I've played the fourth before, actually, but I didn't have time to get very far in it. x( It's at the top of my list for summer game rentals.

Technically the first MGS is the fourth Metal Gear game, though 8D

Oh, yeah, that one's fantastic. 3's a prequel, so you can play it first and understand it perfectly fine, but you lose a lot of the tragic undertones. Actually, it would be interesting to see what it would be like to play 3 first, then 1 and 2, then 3 again, this time getting the full impact. Really, it's an amazingly deep and complex story, and I can't pimp it enough.
