(Battlestar Galactica)

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-07-01 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
I agree. I strongly dislike her as a person, but I can see how a woman in her position could come to make the decisions that she made.

I don't remember this character? :/

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-07-01 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
It's Admiral Cain, commanding the Razor. Fairly early in the series.

Er, Pegasus. That was the name of the ship. Razor was the movie that takes place somewhere during the continuity of S2, all about what happened to the crew of the Pegasus before Galactica found them.

Dammit, brain must have short circuited there...

[identity profile] dgcatanisiri.livejournal.com 2011-07-01 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. Cain was one of the most interesting and complex characters on the show in my book, which is a big accomplishment given the characters on BSG. I understand why she was killed when she was, but I still wonder what would have happened if she'd been around a bit longer.

[identity profile] redknightalex.livejournal.com 2011-07-01 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
Completely and totally agree with you. She was one of the most interesting, complex, and least-understood characters of the series and, even if the things she did were atrocious from a civilian's POV, her actions have been done countless times by generals and commanders we call "great." All a matter of perspective.

Wish we had been given a little more insight into her character than what we had.

She certainly did some things I would consider evil
But was she evil? I don't think so. I think Roslin did a lot of things that could also be considered evil, lots of people on the show were morally grey. I think people are just quick to label her evil because we didn't see as much of her character as we did the other characters.

[identity profile] mistaria.livejournal.com 2011-07-01 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
Why HALLO THAR chance to use one of my BSG icons! I seriously don't have an opinion on this (but no I don't think the character was "evil" -- she was handling the situation in the best way she knew how just like Adama/Roslin were).

What she said ^

Yeah, let's be friends! ::adds::

So say we all!

(Anonymous) 2011-07-01 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
She deliberately left what was (to her knowledge) the last remnants of humanity stranded and helpless against the Cylons in order to pursue a war she knew was lost.

She's an evil bitch.

Regardless of anything else, that one act made her irredeemable.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-01 07:09 pm (UTC)(link)
So did Roslin when she ordered the jump to Ragnar Anchorage. Did that make her irredeemable?

[identity profile] claro3.livejournal.com 2011-07-10 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
I know this is super-late, but...

...Seriously? Seriously? "I'm gonna be straight with you here: the human race is about to be wiped out. We have fifty thousand people left, and that's it. Now, if we are even going to survive as a species, then we need to get the hell out of here and we need to start having babies." Somehow I think you misunderstood the jump to Ragnar.

I love Cain to death but what she did and what Roslin did were in no way the same.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-30 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
I hate Roslin and I agree with you about their circumstances being different.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-30 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
Totally, completely agreed.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-01 06:13 am (UTC)(link)
I'm all for shades of grey, but I find it nearly impossible to dredge up even a minimum of sympathy for someone who deliberately uses serial rape as a means to punish/break someone. Even if the person in question is a cylon.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-01 07:18 pm (UTC)(link)
The OP isn't asking for anyone to be sympathetic to Cain or the methods she employed. I think OP is just frustrated that Cain is passed off as an "evil bitch" without allowing for exploration of the depth of her character. Certainly she made some heartless decisions (cruel, horrible ones at times), but why? Not just because she was an evil bitch.

[identity profile] chuhunt.livejournal.com 2011-07-01 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Cain was messed up in the head.

She had to deal with a situation that was nigh impossible to manage.

After the betrayal of her 6 lover I feel she lost it.

However, I personally disagree with the torture and constant rape of that 6 because no creature deserves that...machine or not.

In my opinion, Cain was unduly cruel to allow those atrocities to happen to the 6 on her ship. Also, I feel as if she did it because she felt so upset that she fell for the Cylon disguise enough to even have a RELATIONSHIP with a Cylon agent.

I wouldn't wish something like that on any person I have ever cared for even in the slightest, regardless of if that person was a machine or not.

[identity profile] chuhunt.livejournal.com 2011-07-01 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Also, on a side note I have this weird assumption about Cain's character that she was probably molested and/or raped (perhaps as a means of punishment) by someone as a child or teen and to her serial rape/molestation is a justified "ultimate payback" for any form of betrayal.

Might seem weird, but I've thought a lot about Cain, her methods, and her possible motives for the things that were done by her in the show.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-30 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
What is remotely "complex" about a character who pursued the repulsive, inhumane, dehumanizing actions she did? If you think she's a "complex" character, I'd (probably rightly) assume that you're a sexist who accepts and handwaves her actions because she's a female and therefore cannot be evil. Her actions make her evil. There was NOTHING complex about it. The fact that they acted like there was really only called to light their failings as writers of complex characters with their hamfisted portrayal of her. Ridiculous bullshit.
