It's a simple matter to wash the sheets after the fact. Not really all that gross unless you keep piling mess onto those sheets week after week and just letting it sit there. And man, I try keeping tissues handy, but sometimes you just gotta grab what's convenient. It's often an article of clothing.

Too Big

Some of those new to the series weren't even of reading age when it started. Remember, it's a series meant for young readers, who grow up with the books. So at least some of those fans you're sneering at are children.

Jealousy is a pretty natural emotion, though, so you're probably fine so long as you don't actually lash out at these new fans.

Starting a series late? How shameful. Back to the shadow, young 'un, you're not allowed to like things once the expiration date has passed.

W-wait... does that mean I have to give up all my Jane Austen books? Those are REALLY past their expiration date. XD What about Shakespeare?

i really wish i had an edit button

N!S: Oh man, the aliens XD;; I loved them.

T!B: Honestly? You sound kind of like a dick. I mean, I understand being jealous. It happens, and it's natural. But judging someone for when they discover a series? That's just ridiculous.

Ehh, it's a different experience - and they've missed out on awesome stuff as well.

Sure, they can read the next book like THAT, but they also missed out on the sheer excitement of launch days! They never would have experienced being the first in line at the bookstore on a freezing July morning (lol Australia) and getting the first book out of the box in your hands and having that sucker open before the person behind you can even get their copy and spending the day buried in your book then going back and doing it again a few years later.

They missed out on the golden days of fandom when the time between books could be spent on speculating on anything and everything, mounds of art and fic pouring out, people excitedly going "JUST FINISHED READING IT I NEED TO DISCUSS WITH SOMEONE OH MY GOOOOD".

And, quite frankly, they've probably already been spoiled for everything - we got to read it fresh and spoiler-free! We got to read things that NO ONE saw coming, they don't.

So yeah, they get instant gratification. But they've missed out on stuff as well. Goes two ways.

very, very, VERY true

(I wouldn't have even thought of that. I was just gonna say something like "you're being a douche", but omg. *CLUTCHES ALL THE BOOKS TO ME* I love my fandom experience!)

Coming from a different fandom, THIS! I can relate to this so much. I'm one of the latecomers and there's so much I'll never experience - although having 15 years of canon served within 6 months helps with accepting the story as it is, instead of raging because it's not as I had pictured it midways.

So true. Proof is in the pudding as well. I mean, there are lots of secrets about latecomers being sad they missed out on all the excitement. Hell, I sometimes hate that I was born in the 80s and completely missed out being a teen in the 70s. XD

I was going to say EXACTLY this. Sure, reading through seven books at once is awesome (she wrote, with OotP in her lap), even more so if you've never read them before, but I would never give up coming up with crazy theories, standing in line for an entire day waiting for your book, and pretty much growing up with Harry for having all the books out when I started reading. Hell, I remember when the seventh book came out, when I was on my way to the queue and read the newspapers about the crazy fans camping outside the bookstore (and the crazy fans were my best friends X), and you knew that you were one of them. People who are getting into the books now missed out on all that.

This just in! Not everyone who reads is OLD. Some people who are just getting into HP now are only doing so because they are most likely at the age of 8-10ish when most of the original readers started.

Of course, I was almost done HS when the first movie came out, and I'd never even heard of the books. I got bribed into going to see the movie because my friends knew how much I loved Alan Rickman. XD

What the hell is going on in the NF secret? People are getting in arguments over a bisexual girl being disgusted that a dude wipe his hands on the sheets? And then she sends 'T' after green person?

WHA????

Re: NF

[identity profile] countess-k.livejournal.com 2011-07-01 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
That's what I got from it. I think green person is OP. They aren't referring to the content of the conversation, just that those two tag teamed on them.

This reminds me of a forum I was on. There was a gang there who would bully anyone who disagreed with them (or posted ideas they disagreed with.) After the first person bashed you to hell the others would show up like pack animals and agree with the basher and suddenly you were the punch bag of a whole group. Since they all were forum veterans a newcomer had no chance whatsoever. It was disgusting.

I'm WTFing that one too. The layout, the color coding, and like 3 different trains of thought are just too much.

I'm also curious about what I'm missing out on. I prefer that bodily fluids aren't rubbed all over my sheets, too. I can understand not caring but what exactly could a person 'miss out on' in that situation?

Also, why do I never find forums with such discussions? I feel like I'm using my internet wrong now too.

OP

I'm honestly a little peeved that this didn't make the secrets, but that's okay.
---------------------
I'm not Green. I was an observer. And this was on the Penny & Aggie (a webcomic) forums.
---------------------
I realise this is hard to grasp for people who weren't there, but I'll try.
Red and Purple are long-time members, and kinda BNFs. Green is a newer member. T is the comic's creator and main moderator of the site. They're talking about...bodily fluids. Green tells Red she is missing out because hand jobs are great or something. Apparently Red's bisexuality is supposed to be world-renowned, but I sure as hell didn't know about it either.
When somebody tried sticking up for Green by pointing out that Red was being pretty uptight, Purple responded with "dont you DARE blame (Red) for this!"
---------------------
Later, when Green tried to move on and defend him/herself (admittedly in a kinda angry manner, but still), Green got banned.
The entire forum is dumb and elitist. I don't even know why I read the damn comic. It's shit.
---------------------
Sorry this was so confusing.

Look, OP, I can understand the occasional urge to shake your cane and tell those damn kids to get off your lawn. But don't be hatin' the newbies just because they're new, they can't help it that they're late. I know my first book release party was for Order of the Phoenix, just because I missed the first four. Hell, some of them probably couldn't even read when the books were first coming out.

Look at it this way: these kids may have it easier when it comes to getting the books and the movies, but you and I (maybe mostly you, I dunno) were there for the really cool stuff - the parties, the camaraderie, that sort of thing. Be glad for them that they can at least get into it before DHpt2 comes out, so they have one last big event. Hell, be a little grateful, even; they're going to be what helps keep the fandom alive.

So look at it as a chance to talk to people who are reading it with fresh eyes. What's old hat to you and I is going to be brand new to them, and their enthusiasm could just be contagious. You might see some things you missed, you can show them some things they missed. It's a chance to do things over again, in a way.

tl;dr - Be nice to the newbies. They can't help it, and they're good for fandom (provided they don't get too "LOl!!one1"). Maybe you can even talk to a few, and be reminded just why you fell in love with the series in the first place.

I already knew what forum you were talking about. I've never been on there myself but they did seem awfully elitist last I checked.

I'm this close to just giving up on reading that comic. Props to the current artist, he obviously has skill, but his style is way too cartoony and stiff to fit the serious tone of the strip in my opinion, and the old artist's new projects are all terrible anime tripe. (Archime where EVERYBODY'S FUCKING and HIGH SCHOOL DRAMA, whoop dee doo!) Ack.

1) Unless there is context we're missing, there are no good guys in that exchange - douchery all the way around.

2) Dudes (and dudettes): Trick towels. Know 'em, love 'em, use 'em well. They don't cost much (you can often pick up a few at thrift stores for a quarter each, at least around here), you toss them in the laundry when you're done, and you don't get goo on the sheets. Old ratty t-shirts, the ones that finally developed a hole in an embarrassing place but you can't bring yourself to throw them away, also work well in a pinch.

[identity profile] lovedforaday.livejournal.com 2011-07-01 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
As others said, I assume that most of the people who are getting addicted to the series now were too young too experience HP and fandom when the books were originally being released. I don't know, I think I would be happy something that means so much to me is still resonating with people enough for them to become obsessed with it.

What the hell, I'll comment on them all

Personally, I miss Strangetown altogether. It was so different than the lush green towns. And knowing EA you'll be seeing those aliens and UFO abductions in an upcoming expansion in the next year or so. :/

NF
Wank on the internets. Who knew? Maybe OP should stop going there if the members and mods piss them off. Or y'know, not care... unless OP is 'green'? *shrugs* Whatevs.

TB
And just think, they're jealous of you because you got to experience what it was like to wait in anticipation for the next release. Be able to chat about theories and rant/rave with everyone before it was old news. It probably sucks knowing the spoilers before reading the series because let's be honest, you'd have to be living under a rock to not know some key things.

So, how about you grow up and welcome the new fans instead of acting like a spoiled brat who refuses to share their toys, hm?

This "not fandom" (http://i.imgur.com/TJZLr.png) is about a blowup that happened on the Penny and Aggie reader forum. (http://www.pennyandaggie.com/phpbb/viewforum.php?f=1)

And no, I wasn't involved in that one.
