(Anonymous) 2011-07-01 01:00 am (UTC)(link)Anyway, the poster is not saying not shipping Shawn/Gus is racist. They are probably commenting on the the popularity of Shawn/Lassiter, a ship which despite have much less to go on completely eclipses Shawn/Gus in the fandom.
This is actually not an uncommon topic when talking about Psych fandom, I don't know why you think this is a troll secret.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-01 01:09 am (UTC)(link)I don't ship Shawn/Gus or Shawn/Lassie, but I can see why people might prefer the one over the other. It's all down to character dynamics. There's a lot more snark between Shawn and Lassie and there's a bigger emphasis on Shawn slowly gaining Lassie's respect.
Meanwhile, Shawn and Gus are adorable together but they feel very fraternal to me. They're childhood friends who grew up in each other's pockets. And because we get more of them, there's actually less flexibility in a lot of people's eyes to twist their relationship into a romantic one. It's satisfying all on it's own.
I don't think it has to do with race, at least not for most people. It certainly doesn't with me, anyway. One of my biggest ships in another fandom is basically the race twisted equivalent of Shawn/Lassie - a white guy on the run and the black FBI agent who's attempting to track him down. I love them together and one of my favorite episodes of that series is when the FBI agent realizes that the guy he'd written off as a conartist and a murderer is neither and the two have to work together with mutual respect and gentle snarking. Lovely.
I just really prefer that dynamic for shipping over BFF ships. Race doesn't factor into it.

This is how I feel to a tee about Shawn and Gus. It's fantastic just as it is, best friends who will always be there for one another, even when their ideas are outlandish or crazy or might get them killed (okay, that's mostly Shawn's ideas and Gus going along with them, but same thing).
TBH I like the show best without any shipping--the antagonism between Shawn and Lassiter is delicious and making them into lovers would ruin that dynamic for me, and we're not even going to discuss Shawn/Juliet--and just have Shawn and Gus be the crazy awesome investigative team they are in canon.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-01 04:31 am (UTC)(link)I really love Shawn and Gus' canon relationship, too. :) I usually pick up a ship because I'm craving a different sort of interaction than what we get in canon, but with Shawn and Gus I'm very content with what we're given. I wouldn't change their dynamic for the world.
I agree about Shawn and Lassiter as well, TBH. I haven't come across a fic with that ship yet that kept them IC and kept their dynamic as I prefer it in canon. I've read some fantastic gen fic that does, so I usually stick to gen.
Shawn/Jules isn't my preferred pairing either. Jules and Gus or Jules and Lassiter work really well for me though! The Jules/Lassiter hug after she's rescued from the clock gets me all wibbly every time I watch it.
