Yeah, but he's obsessed in a bad way. I mean, he kind of hates Shawn. Why does his dream proving him to be a fake make for a good ship? It's not just Psych. There are a lot of pairings like this and idgi.

There are a lot of pairings like that, and they tend to be immensely popular. I mean, it's not my favorite dynamic either, but you'd think sheer saturation would be enough to make you understand it if not enjoy it.

I have a hard time understanding people who can't understand the appeal of something they don't personally like.

Elementary, my dear Fanson. You see, when the goal is to have the characters reach a state of high-intensity lustful passion for each other, there are two ways to get there. The "friendship to love to lust to OMGPASSION" route sounds like it would be the most obvious choice... but that is in fact exactly the problem with it; when two characters are obviously meant for each other, there is no suspense about what will happen, only about how fast. But with the other route, "conflict escalates to a burning passion of anger and then moves sideways to a burning passion of munkyluv," there's no limit to how high the flames of hostile passion can be stoked before the flashover to gettin' jiggy occurs. Therefore, there's always suspense as to when the crucial point is going to arrive.

... or, I could be completely wrong. But I like my theory! :)

Makes sense to me.

Besides, with BFFs, there's so much already established there. They're either going to seem like siblings or like old marrieds. There's just less ~drama~ in general. (Although, it doesn't have to be that way. People tend to write it that way, though.)

Fair enough. I guess it's just not my thing. Sometimes the frenemies thing works for me, but very rarely. I guess just see anger and annoyance where others see passion and lust.

It's just one of those pairing setups *shrugs* Same way some people ship buddy-ships, and some prefer rival-ships. I bounce back and forth sometimes depending on if I like buddyfic or rivalfic for a series, and sometimes... like, TOS Star Trek, in my head Kirk and Spock are canon soulmates, and.... no desire to look for fic.

And there's lots of rambling that can be done about passionate emotion, or obsession being depth of feeling, or whatnot, but I think in the end it just comes down to personal preference and if a pairing clicks or not. (and personally, Shawn and Gus fall into the Kirk Spock thing. They're canon, doesn't matter if there's sex, they're canon, so if I were to go looking for fic I'd probably go Lassie/Gus just because it's unusual and could be fun if it was pulled off well)

you might have no desire to look for fic, but you can't say that Kirk/Spock isn't the biggest Trek pairing, if not the biggest SLASH pairing, in all of the known universe, with a metric ton of fic dedicated to it.

and they're a bff ship.

that's what's frustrating. here we have another bff ship, but it gets largely ignored in favor of the white dudes. it's not the only incidence of this happening in fandoms either; whiteguy/nonwhiteguy, even when nonwhiteguy is a LEAD CHARACTER, gets shafted. it starts to grate on a person.

As someone who does love shipping BFFs, like Kirk/Spock, Holmes/Watson, Troy/Abed, the main difference in me not shipping Shawn/Gus is that it really bothers me the way that Shawn treats Gus. I know it's all for comedy and they do obviously have a long-standing friendship, but quite frankly it's more dysfunctional and disrespectful than I'd like. If I knew Gus IRL, I'd tell him to stop letting Shawn walk all over him and that he deserved better. For that particular reason, I don't really ship Shawn/Lassiter either, but I do love Jules/Lassiter. Friends, respect, partnership. My favourite dynamic.
